Background

He joined Mitsubishi Internal Combustion Engine Manufacturing in 1921. He rose through the company as a mechanical engineer and became President in May 1965.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (1921)

Selection

In May 1965 he succeeded the first president, Shinzo Fujii, who became Chairman. The change came 11 months after the three-way merger. The three companies' combined net sales just before the merger were about ¥319.4 billion, and they had only just become one company. The appointment appears to have handed him the work of integrating the three companies' businesses.

Initiatives

In fiscal 1965 ships were the largest division at 26% of sales, but in fiscal 1968 automobiles took the top spot at 28% (¥176.9 billion), followed by Machinery Division 1 at 24% (¥153.3 billion), with ships down to 19% (¥120.9 billion). Total net sales for fiscal 1968 were ¥627.2 billion. Capital expenditure was about ¥17 billion in fiscal 1968, and about ¥30 billion was planned for fiscal 1969. He handed over to Yoichiro Makita in May 1969.
