Background
He joined Mitsubishi Shipbuilding in 1957. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, Shin Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Nippon Heavy Industries merged in 1964 to form Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and he came up through its machinery division, becoming Executive Vice President and head of the Machinery Headquarters in 1994. He was promoted to President in June 1995, in his 38th year with the company.
Selection
In June 1995 he succeeded Kentaro Aikawa as President. In the fiscal year ended March 1995, the year before, consolidated net sales were ¥2,848.5 billion and net income ¥77.9 billion. Demand for power plants and machinery plants from the industrialization of Asian countries was lifting results, and the Executive Vice President who had headed the Machinery Headquarters took over.
Initiatives
In fiscal 1996 ordinary income was ¥192.6 billion and net income ¥110.6 billion, both records. Orders topped ¥3 trillion for the first time, and return on equity was 9.9%. However, Asian countries accounted for 59% of the ¥1,156.0 billion in overseas orders, and in fiscal 1997 earnings deteriorated sharply. The ordinary income target, set at ¥195.0 billion at the start of the year, was cut twice to ¥120.0 billion, and worsening cash flow forced the company to raise funds on the order of ¥400 billion.
