Background
He joined the company in 1968 and became a Director 30 years later, in 1998. He became a Managing Director in 2002 and Representative Director, President and Executive Officer in 2004. His predecessor Yozo Izuhara had joined in 1962 and Vice Chairman Tomoaki Abe in 1963; the management team of the time was made up of career employees who had joined in the 1960s.
Selection
In June 2004 he succeeded Yozo Izuhara as Representative Director, President and Executive Officer, with Izuhara moving to Representative Director and Chairman that month. In the prior fiscal year, ended March 2004, consolidated net sales were ¥269.1 billion and ordinary profit ¥7.8 billion, a recovery from an ordinary loss of ¥1.6 billion in FY ended March 2003. Britain's Pilkington had been an equity-method affiliate since October 2001.
Initiatives
In June 2006 the company made Britain's Pilkington a wholly owned subsidiary, and Fujimoto became its chairman that same month. Consolidated net sales grew 3.3-fold, from ¥265.9 billion in FY ended March 2006 to ¥865.6 billion in FY ended March 2008. He became Executive Officer and CEO in October 2007 and Chairman in June 2008, handing the presidency to Stuart Chambers, who came from Pilkington.
