Background

Born in Hyogo in 1892, he graduated from Kobe Higher Commercial School in 1916 and joined Sumitomo's head office. He was seconded to Nippon Sheet Glass in December 1922, became sales manager in October 1927, a Director in January 1933 and a Managing Director in May 1942. He spent the 21 years from his secondment to becoming President on the sales side.

Education: Kobe Higher Commercial School (now Kobe University) (1916)

Selection

He became a Managing Director in May 1942 and President one year and seven months later, in December 1943. He took the post 21 years after his secondment from Sumitomo's head office, having climbed the internal ranks of sales manager, Director and Managing Director in turn. The change came in wartime, and the officer listings of the Japan Company Directory record nothing on his predecessor or the circumstances of the handover.

Initiatives

His tenure lasted 18 years and five months. The company opened a research laboratory in Amagasaki in 1949, listed its shares on the Tokyo, Osaka and other stock exchanges in 1950, opened the Maizuru plant in 1952, and in 1954 established Nippon Safety Glass, an automotive glass subsidiary. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥13.3 billion in FY ended March 1960 to ¥17.9 billion in FY ended March 1962. In May 1962 he moved to Chairman, handing the presidency to Itsuro Watanabe.
