Background

He joined the company in April 1981, became head of the planning office of the Building Glass Company in April 2003, and in January 2005 was both head of production engineering for functional glass and president of the subsidiary NSG Kanto. From July 2010 he headed manufacturing, processing and sales for the UK and southern Europe in the Architectural Glass business. The company had acquired Britain's Pilkington in 2006, and he spent nearly two years in Europe, where the integration was playing out. In June 2012 he became Senior Executive Officer and head of the Technical Glass business, which he led for the three years before becoming President.

Selection

In April 2015 he succeeded Keiji Yoshikawa as Representative Executive Officer, President and CEO. In the fiscal year before he took over, ended March 2015, consolidated net sales were ¥626.7 billion and net income ¥1.7 billion, a thin profit after net losses of ¥34.3 billion in FY ended March 2013 and ¥16.6 billion in FY ended March 2014. For the three years just before, he had headed the Technical Glass business. At a time when results swung between losses and profits, the appointment appears to have chosen someone who led the other business rather than architectural glass.

Initiatives

Over his eight years, consolidated net sales rose 22%, from ¥626.7 billion in the year before he took office to ¥763.5 billion in FY ended March 2023. The bottom line alternated between profit and loss, with net losses of ¥49.8 billion in FY ended March 2016, ¥18.9 billion in FY ended March 2020, ¥16.9 billion in FY ended March 2021 and ¥33.8 billion in FY ended March 2023, his final year. Operating results stayed in the black from FY ended March 2018 onward, with operating profit of ¥34.8 billion in FY ended March 2023. With operating profit and net losses still coexisting, he handed over to Munehiro Hosonuma in April 2023.
