Background
He graduated from Kobe University of Commerce in 1933, joined Kokusai Kisen and moved to Nippon Sheet Glass in December 1934. An accounting man, he became accounting manager in December 1948, a Director in 1951, a Managing Director in May 1958 and a Senior Managing Director in February 1967. He spent 34 years at the company before becoming President.
Selection
His predecessor, Itsuro Watanabe, had moved from Iwai Shoten to Nippon Sheet Glass in 1938 and served as President from 1962. The Japan Company Directory lists Watanabe as President through its 1968 edition and switches to Seihachiro Takimoto in the 1970 edition. The company had signed a float process technology license with Pilkington in March 1964 and produced the first float glass in Asia at its Maizuru plant in November 1965, and was now at the stage of recouping that capital investment. A Senior Managing Director with long experience in accounting was installed as President for that payback period.
Initiatives
To mark the company's 50th anniversary in 1968, he opened a new research laboratory in Itami, taking over the functions of the Amagasaki laboratory. In 1970 the company absorbed Nippon Safety Glass and opened the Kawasaki plant. Net sales grew from ¥31.2 billion in FY ended March 1968 to ¥42.6 billion in FY ended March 1971, and net income from ¥1.8 billion to ¥2.3 billion.
