Background

Born in Fukuoka in 1914, he graduated from Hikone Higher Commercial School in 1935 and joined the company that April. He became a Director in May 1962 and a Managing Director in May 1966. Along the way he also served on the boards of Nihon Aluminium Sash from March 1964 and Daiken Sash from May 1965, and was president of Nippon Silica Kogyo from November 1967. It was 36 years from joining to becoming President.

In May 1971 he succeeded Seihachiro Takimoto as President. That same month Makizo Miyasaka moved from Senior Managing Director to Chairman. In the fiscal year before he took over, ended March 1971, non-consolidated net sales were ¥42.6 billion and net income ¥2.3 billion, a 12% increase on the prior year. The parent passed to a man who had spent five years as Managing Director while also running Nippon Silica Kogyo for three and a half years.

Initiatives

During his tenure the company set up the joint venture Malaysian Sheet Glass in 1971 and, in 1975, the automotive glass joint venture L-N Safety Glass in Mexico. Non-consolidated net sales rose 72%, from ¥42.6 billion in FY ended March 1971 to ¥73.1 billion in FY ended March 1976, his final year, but the bottom line swung from net income of ¥1.1 billion in FY ended March 1975 to a net loss of ¥0.2 billion in FY ended March 1976. In June 1976 he became Director and Senior Adviser, handing the presidency to Toshihiko Suganuma.
