Background

He joined Showa Denko in April 1982 and became an Executive Officer in January 2013. He became Managing Executive Officer and CTO in January 2016 and Director and Managing Executive Officer in March that year, and President the following January, 2017. It took 31 years from joining to Executive Officer and 35 to the presidency. Only ten months passed between joining the board and becoming President.

Selection

In January 2017 he succeeded Hideo Ichikawa as Representative Director and President. His immediately prior post was Managing Executive Officer and CTO, and he was promoted ten months after joining the board. In the FY ended December 2016, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥671.1 billion, having shrunk by ¥183.0 billion over six periods from ¥854.1 billion in the FY ended December 2011, Ichikawa's first period. The change appears to have assigned the head of the technology function to rebuild scale.

Initiatives

In 2017 the company acquired SGL's graphite electrode business, and in 2020 brought Hitachi Chemical under its umbrella. In the FY ended December 2018, consolidated net sales were ¥992.1 billion, operating income ¥180.0 billion and net income ¥111.5 billion, the largest operating and net income of his five periods. In the FY ended December 2020 the company posted an operating loss of ¥19.4 billion and a net loss of ¥76.3 billion. Reflecting the acquisition, in the FY ended December 2021 sales swelled to ¥1,419.6 billion and the workforce to 33,684, from ¥906.4 billion and 10,476 in the FY ended December 2019.
