Background

He joined Nippon Iodine, the predecessor of Showa Denko, in December 1932. Eight years after joining, in August 1940, he became Managing Director, and in May 1945 Senior Managing Director, but he resigned in January 1947. From January 1948 he served as a Director and later Director and Executive Vice President of Chugai Pharmaceutical, returning to Showa Denko as a Director in February 1953. He became Senior Managing Director in September that year and Director and Executive Vice President in August 1955, returning to the core of management after six years outside.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Law, German Law; Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Economics (now University of Tokyo) (1927, 1931)

Selection

He became Director and President in January 1959. It was a promotion three years and five months after becoming Executive Vice President in August 1955. His predecessor was Seiji Nagai. In the FY ended December 1958, non-consolidated net sales were ¥23.5 billion and operating income ¥2.0 billion, down from ¥24.7 billion and ¥2.6 billion the year before. The change appears to have put to work for the turnaround a man who had risen to Senior Managing Director before the war and then spent time outside the company.

Initiatives

During his tenure non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥29.9 billion in the FY ended December 1959 to ¥119.7 billion in the FY ended December 1969, with net income of ¥3.7 billion. He also became Director and President of Showa Neoprene in December 1960 and later of Nippon Olefin Chemical, personally leading petrochemical joint ventures. In February 1971 he moved to Director and Chairman, handing the presidency to Executive Vice President Haruo Suzuki.
