Background

He joined Showa Denko in January 1942. He became a Director in February 1967 and Managing Director in August that year, and served as General Manager of the Petrochemical Division. He became Senior Managing Director in February 1973 and Director and Executive Vice President in March 1976, taking 34 years from joining to Executive Vice President. Unlike the two preceding presidents, Masao Anzai and Haruo Suzuki, both law graduates, he was a technical man trained in applied chemistry.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Engineering, Applied Chemistry (now University of Tokyo) (1941)

Selection

When he became Director and Executive Vice President in March 1976, Fumihiko Mori served alongside him as Executive Vice President. With Mori stepping back to Director in July 1979 and moving to Standing Corporate Auditor in September that year, only one homegrown Executive Vice President remained. The other Executive Vice President, Hitomasa Miura, was a former Managing Director of Fuji Bank. As of April 1980 Haruo Suzuki was still President, so the change came after that. The appointment appears to have followed an order of handing over to a homegrown technical man.

Initiatives

After he took office, non-consolidated net sales fell from ¥384.4 billion in the FY ended December 1981 to ¥355.0 billion in the FY ended December 1983, with ordinary losses of ¥9.1 billion in the FY ended December 1982 and ¥2.7 billion in the FY ended December 1983. In the FY ended December 1984 sales recovered to ¥411.6 billion and ordinary income to ¥18.3 billion, but net income was only ¥100 million. The organization he inherited from his predecessor was a business headquarters system comprising chemical products, electric furnace products and development business headquarters.
