Background

He joined Showa Denko in April 1968. He also served as Representative Director and President of Montell JPO from June 1996 to June 1999 and as Representative Director and Executive Vice President of SunAllomer from January 2001 to March 2002, running affiliates. At the parent he became Managing Director in March 2002 and Senior Managing Director in March 2004, and it was 37 years from joining to the presidency.

Selection

In January 2005 he succeeded Mitsuo Ohashi as Representative Director and President. It was a promotion ten months after becoming Senior Managing Director, and he took office in January rather than March, when the annual general meeting is held. In the FY ended December 2004, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥740.7 billion, ordinary income ¥38.9 billion and net income ¥7.5 billion. The change appears to have put his record running two affiliates to work on reshaping the parent's businesses.

Initiatives

His tenure covered six periods, from the FY ended December 2005 to the FY ended December 2010. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥811.8 billion and topped ¥1 trillion in the FY ended December 2007 at ¥1,023.2 billion, with operating income of ¥76.7 billion and net income of ¥33.0 billion. Sales fell to ¥678.2 billion in the FY ended December 2009, with an operating loss of ¥5.0 billion and a net loss of ¥37.9 billion. In the FY ended December 2010 they recovered to ¥797.1 billion with operating income of ¥38.7 billion.
