Background

He joined Showa Denko in June 1939 and became Managing Director six years later, in May 1945. After resigning in January 1947, he returned as Managing Director in January 1951, rising to Senior Managing Director in August 1955 and Director and Executive Vice President in January 1959. He also served as Director and Executive Vice President of Showa Neoprene from December 1960, Director and President of AA Chemical from November 1964 and Director and Executive Vice President of Nippon Olefin Chemical from May 1965, running joint ventures in parallel.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Law (now University of Tokyo) (1936)

Selection

He became Director and President in February 1971. His predecessor Masao Anzai moved to Director and Chairman the same month. He was promoted after 12 years as Executive Vice President, and Kiichi Kotani, who became Executive Vice President at the same time, was a banker who had joined Showa Denko in August 1967 after serving as a Managing Director of Fuji Bank. In the FY ended December 1970, non-consolidated net sales were ¥154.3 billion and ordinary income ¥6.5 billion, a fourfold increase in sales from ¥36.6 billion in the FY ended December 1960. The change appears to have handed over to a successor with a similar background of leading joint ventures.

Initiatives

Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥166.5 billion in the FY ended December 1971 to ¥443.2 billion in the FY ended December 1980. Over this period the company posted ordinary losses of ¥1.6 billion in the FY ended December 1972, ¥7.4 billion in the FY ended December 1975 and ¥12.4 billion in the FY ended December 1976. He reorganized the company from a division system into a business headquarters system, and as of April 1980 there were chemical products, electric furnace products and development business headquarters. In March 1977 he brought in Hitomasa Miura, a former Managing Director of Fuji Bank, as Senior Managing Director and General Manager of Corporate Planning, and made him Executive Vice President in March 1979.
