Background
He joined the company in April 1969, became an Executive Officer in June 2001 and Managing Executive Officer in June 2003. He joined the board in June 2005, and a year later, in June 2006, became Representative Director and President. He became President 37 years after joining and one year after joining the board.
Selection
In June 2006 he succeeded Shoichiro Suzuki as President. In the FY ended March 2006, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥1,213.8 billion and operating income ¥73.9 billion, with 20,223 employees. The month after he took office the company announced a hostile tender offer for Hokuetsu Paper, and the appointment appears to have given the new President the role of driving industry consolidation.
Initiatives
The tender offer for Hokuetsu Paper announced in July 2006 failed in September, when a majority could no longer be expected after a third-party allotment of shares to Mitsubishi Corporation in August and counter-buying by Nippon Paper. In October 2007 the company established Jiangsu Oji Paper in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, and began building an integrated production site starting from pulp. Consolidated net sales were flat, from ¥1,265.7 billion in the FY ended March 2007 to ¥1,212.9 billion in the FY ended March 2012, while the workforce grew from 20,223 to 24,683.
