Background

He graduated from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tokyo in 1941 and joined Oji Paper. He rose through administration at a single mill, becoming General Manager of Operations at the Kasugai Mill in January 1963, General Manager of Administration in June 1965, deputy mill manager in December 1967, Director and acting mill manager in November 1968 and mill manager in September 1970. He became Managing Director in November 1971, General Manager of Corporate Planning in November 1974 and Senior Managing Director in June 1976. Born in Ishikawa Prefecture, he was a career employee who moved from mill administration to corporate planning at head office.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Economics (1941)

Selection

In 1982 he succeeded Shuhei Ichimura as President. Whereas Ichimura, who joined in the same year of 1941, became a Director in November 1963, Kawake's board appointment came in November 1968, five years later. In the 1979 and 1980 editions of the Japan company directory he is listed alongside Ichimura as Director and Executive Vice President. In the FY ended March 1982, the year before he took office, sales were ¥344.1 billion and ordinary income ¥8.4 billion. The appointment appears to have entrusted the rebuilding of profitability to an Executive Vice President who had long run a mill.

Initiatives

During his tenure, ordinary income grew from ¥8.4 billion in the FY ended March 1982 to ¥32.3 billion in the FY ended March 1985, and net income from ¥4.3 billion to ¥17.1 billion. Sales went from ¥344.1 billion to ¥374.2 billion over the same period, growth of less than 10%. Ordinary income rose every period, to ¥13.0 billion in the FY ended March 1983 and ¥22.9 billion in the FY ended March 1984, making it a period of restoring profitability without expanding scale.
