Background
He joined Oji Paper in 1961 and worked on production equipment, serving as General Manager of Facilities at the Kasugai Mill and Deputy General Manager of the Technology Headquarters. After serving as Director, Managing Director and Senior Managing Director, he rose to Representative Director and Executive Vice President and became President in June 2001. The top shareholders were led by The Master Trust Bank of Japan at 6.1%, followed by trust banks, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Mizuho Corporate Bank and Norinchukin Bank, with no individuals in the top ten. He was a career equipment engineer with no capital behind him.
Selection
In June 2001 he succeeded Masahiko Okuni as President. In the FY ended March 2001, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥1,252.9 billion and net income ¥12.8 billion, but in the FY ended March 2002, his first year, the company swung to a net loss of ¥17.6 billion, with 21,683 employees. The appointment appears to have entrusted an Executive Vice President who had long overseen mill equipment with reducing surplus production capacity.
Initiatives
Over his five years, consolidated net sales stayed flat at around ¥1.2 trillion. Consolidated ordinary income rose from ¥20.1 billion in the FY ended March 2002 to ¥80.5 billion in the FY ended March 2005, and the bottom line recovered from a ¥17.6 billion loss to a ¥43.3 billion profit. The workforce fell by 3,049, from 21,683 to 18,634, over the same period. Rather than growing sales, these were five years of restoring profitability by cutting staff and equipment.
