Background

Born in Miyagi Prefecture in 1925, he graduated from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tokyo in 1950 and joined the company the following year, 1951. He rose from Deputy General Manager to General Manager of Administration at the Kasugai Mill, was seconded to Chuetsu Pulp Industry as a senior researcher attached to the Personnel Department in September 1970, and returned to head office in September 1972 as chief researcher attached to the executive in charge. He built a career covering both finance and mills, becoming Director and Deputy General Manager of Corporate Planning in November 1974, General Manager of Finance in June 1976 and manager of the Kasugai Mill in June 1978.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Economics (1950)

Selection

In 1989 he succeeded Jiro Kawake as President. In April 1989, the same year he took office, the company merged with Toyo Pulp, and in October 1993 it changed its name to New Oji Paper through a merger with Kanzaki Paper. Given his successive posts as General Manager of Finance and manager of the Kasugai Mill, he appears to have been chosen as an executive able to handle the equipment and funds that would grow through absorbing competitors.

Initiatives

During his tenure the company absorbed two companies, Toyo Pulp and Kanzaki Paper, and in October 1993 changed its name to New Oji Paper. In December 1991 it rebuilt its Ginza head office as a 15-story building. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥658.7 billion in the FY ended March 1992 to ¥779.7 billion in the FY ended March 1995, while consolidated net income fell from ¥8.4 billion to ¥5.4 billion, and in June 1995 he handed the presidency to Masahiko Okuni.
