Background
He graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Keio University in September 1943 and joined Nisshinbo in October that year. He became a Director in June 1967, Managing Director in June 1969 and Senior Managing Director in December 1972, before becoming Director and President in December 1973. He moved to Director and Chairman in July 1979. Born in 1920 in Tokyo, he became President at the age of 53.
Selection
In December 1973 he became Director and President as Tatsu Tsuyuguchi moved to Director and Chairman. It was a promotion a year after becoming Senior Managing Director, and he took only six and a half years from Director to President. Hideo Nakase, who joined the board in the same month of June 1967, lagged behind, becoming Managing Director in June 1970 and Senior Managing Director in July 1976; the order appears to have been that whoever pulled ahead from the same starting line on the board moved on to the presidency.
Initiatives
His tenure was five and a half years, from December 1973 to July 1979. In the FY ended March 1974, his first year, non-consolidated net sales were ¥112.8 billion and net income ¥7.8 billion, but the textile slump after the first oil crisis cut them to ¥97.5 billion and ¥3.9 billion in the FY ended March 1975. In the FY ended April 1976, sales fell as low as ¥95.2 billion and ordinary income ¥4.8 billion. Sales then rose for three straight periods, and in the FY ended April 1979, his final year, recovered to ¥126.9 billion with ordinary income of ¥11.5 billion.
