Background

He joined Nisshinbo in April 1975, became Executive Officer and General Manager of Human Resources in June 2006, and also Deputy General Manager of Accounting from April 2007. He then served in succession as Representative Director and President of three operating companies: Nisshinbo Brake from April 2009, Nisshinbo Chemical from June 2011 and Nisshinbo Mechatronics from June 2012. His career took him from administrative work in personnel and accounting to learning management by moving among the spun-off operating companies.

Education: Hitotsubashi University, Faculty of Economics (1975)

Selection

In June 2013 he succeeded Shizuka Uzawa as Representative Director and President. In the FY ended March 2013, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥450.7 billion, operating income ¥13.4 billion and net income ¥6.4 billion. He was appointed right after four straight years as president of three operating companies, and the choice appears to have been made after testing him with the management of spun-off subsidiaries.

Initiatives

In the FY ended March 2014, his first year, consolidated net sales were ¥494.4 billion and operating income ¥13.2 billion; by the FY ended March 2017 sales had grown to ¥527.3 billion while operating income fell to ¥4.9 billion. In 2018 the company changed its fiscal year-end from March to December, and in the irregular nine-month FY ended December 2018 it posted consolidated net sales of ¥416.2 billion, an operating loss of ¥2.5 billion and a net loss of ¥7.2 billion. Scale expanded but margins thinned, and the company fell into the red just before he stepped down.
