Background
He graduated from the Faculty of Law at Tokyo Imperial University in 1926 and joined Nisshinbo. He became Managing Director in December 1943, Senior Managing Director in June 1944 and Director and President in December 1945. He became Representative Director in December 1951 and moved to Director and Chairman in June 1964. Born in 1904 in Hiroshima Prefecture, he became President at the age of 41.
Selection
In December 1945, four months after the end of the war, he became Director and President. He was appointed 19 years after joining, at the age of 41. It was a promotion two years after becoming Managing Director, and the appointment appears to have entrusted postwar reconstruction to a man in his forties who had only just been raised to the board during the war. He became Representative Director six years after taking office, in December 1951, so there was a gap between the presidency and the grant of representative authority.
Initiatives
His tenure lasted 18 and a half years, from December 1945 to June 1964. In June 1958 the company built the Tokushima Plant, and in October 1961 it was listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥22.5 billion in the FY ended March 1952 to ¥29.4 billion in the FY ended March 1964, just before he stepped down. Net income, however, fell from ¥2.5 billion to ¥1.6 billion over the same period, so growth in scale was not matched by profitability.
