Background

He joined Oracle Japan in April 1998 and moved to DeNA in November 1999. An early member who joined in the year of its founding, he became Director in June 2006 and Director, Executive Officer and COO in April 2009. It took six years and seven months from joining to the board, and two years and two months from becoming COO to the presidency. In July 2016 he also became Representative Director and President of the joint venture PFDeNA.

Selection

In June 2011 he succeeded founder Tomoko Namba as president. His predecessor had been Representative Director since August 1999, making this the first change at the top since the company's founding. In the fiscal year ended March 2011, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥112.7 billion and operating income ¥56.1 billion, more than double the ¥48.1 billion and ¥21.3 billion of the previous year. He was promoted after supporting his predecessor as COO for a little over two years.

Initiatives

In December 2011 the company acquired the Yokohama BayStars, entering professional baseball. In 2015 it formed a capital and business alliance with Nintendo and began jointly developing games for smart devices. Consolidated net sales grew to ¥202.4 billion and operating income to ¥76.8 billion in the FY ended March 2013, but fell back to ¥143.7 billion and ¥19.8 billion in the FY ended March 2016. In the FY ended March 2020 the company posted an operating loss of ¥45.7 billion and a net loss of ¥49.1 billion.
