Background
He joined Nisshin Flour Milling in April 1967, became deputy general manager of the finance department in June 1993 and Director and general manager of the planning and finance departments in June 1995. He went on to hold posts in charge of funds and accounts: Director and general manager of finance in June 1997, Managing Director in June 2000 and Managing Director and head of accounting and finance in July 2001. In June 2005 he also headed corporate planning while overseeing accounting and finance, in June 2006 focused on heading corporate planning, and in June 2007 became Senior Managing Director and head of corporate planning.
Selection
In June 2007 he was promoted to Senior Managing Director and head of corporate planning, and four months later, in October 2007, became President. In the same month of October 2007, Mikihisa Nanri became Director and head of corporate planning and Akihisa Sasaki moved to Senior Executive Officer and Senior Managing Director of Nisshin Flour Milling Inc., so the change of President took place not at the June annual meeting but at the same time as a reshuffle of officer assignments across the group. Murakami joined the board in June 1995, in his 28th year with the company, earlier than Yasutaka Miyauchi (33rd year) or Nanri (35th year).
Initiatives
Nisshin Kyorin Pharmaceutical, run as a joint venture with Kyorin Pharmaceutical since April 1996, merged with Kyorin Pharmaceutical in October 2008, and the company let go of its pharmaceutical business. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥431.8 billion in his first fiscal year, ended March 2008, to ¥466.6 billion in FY ended March 2009, and were ¥424.1 billion in FY ended March 2011. Over the same period consolidated ordinary profit rose from ¥22.2 billion to ¥27.8 billion and net income from ¥11.1 billion to ¥14.1 billion, with record highs during his tenure of ¥29.3 billion in ordinary profit and ¥16.8 billion in net income in FY ended March 2010.
