Background
Born in Gunma Prefecture in 1903, he graduated from Tokyo University of Commerce in March 1927 and joined Nisshin Flour Milling in May 1929. Six years after joining, in December 1935, he became a Director, then Managing Director the following December and Senior Managing Director in December 1940. His pace differed from that of the career employees listed alongside him: Hideo Matsumoto took 23 years from joining in 1925 to reach the board, Yoshio Ishii 26 years from 1935, and Yoshichi Suzuki 25 years from 1937. His advancement appears to have been as a member of the founding family.
Selection
In June 1945 he became President from Senior Managing Director, at age 42, ten years after joining the board and four and a half years after becoming Senior Managing Director. It was two months before the end of the war. He took on the presidency in wartime and went on to lead the postwar rebuilding. He served as President for 28 years and five months, until moving to Chairman in November 1973.
Initiatives
His tenure ran 28 years, from June 1945 to November 1973. Non-consolidated net sales grew 4.2-fold from ¥32.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1955, the earliest on record, to ¥134.6 billion in his final year, FY ended March 1974. Net income, by contrast, rose only from ¥1.2 billion in FY ended March 1963 to ¥1.8 billion in FY ended March 1974. In November 1973 he stepped back to Chairman and handed the presidency to Senior Managing Director Yoshio Ishii.
