Background

He joined the company in April 1980. He became an Executive Officer 28 years later, in June 2008, a Director the following June, and President in April 2011, less than three years after becoming an officer. From June 2008 he also served as Managing Director and head of operations at the core operating company Nisshin Flour Milling, moving to Senior Managing Director and head of operations in June 2010. His career combined serving as a holding company officer with heading the operations side of the flour milling business.

Selection

In April 2011 he succeeded Ippei Murakami as President. He had joined the parent company's board in June 2009, so he was appointed after one year and ten months as a Director. Consolidated net sales in the fiscal year ended March 2011, the year before he took office, were ¥424.1 billion, down for two straight years from ¥466.6 billion in FY ended March 2009. Amid continuing declines in sales, the appointment put the head of the operating company's operations at the top of the holding company.

Initiatives

Over six years in office, consolidated net sales rose 25% from ¥424.1 billion in FY ended March 2011 to ¥532.0 billion in FY ended March 2017. Operating profit, however, was almost unchanged, from ¥25.3 billion to ¥25.5 billion, and the operating margin fell from 6.0% to 4.8%. The workforce grew by 872, from 5,452 to 6,324. He handed over to the next generation without the sales growth and expanded headcount having translated into profit.
