Background

He joined Toyota Motor Co. in April 1968, became a Director of Toyota Motor in June 1995, Managing Director in June 1999 and Senior Managing Director in June 2001. He had never worked at Aisin Seiki, and moved over as President in June 2005 after 37 years on the Toyota Motor side. As of the fiscal year ended March 2008 he held 18 thousand shares, far short of the 141 thousand held by Chairman Kanshiro Toyoda. Aisin Seiki's largest shareholder was Toyota Motor, with a 22.25% stake.

Education: Tohoku University, Graduate School of Engineering, Master's Program (1968)

Selection

In June 2005 he became President, succeeding Kanshiro Toyoda, who had been President since June 1995. Toyoda moved to Chairman the same month and remained a Representative Director in the officer list for the fiscal year ended March 2008. The seven Executive Vice Presidents and Senior Managing Directors in the same list were all career employees who had joined Aisin Seiki between 1966 and 1975, taking 26 to 32 years to go from joining to the board. Bringing in a Senior Managing Director from Toyota Motor, the largest shareholder with 22.25%, the appointment appears to have taken the President from outside the internal promotion line.

Initiatives

In his first three years, consolidated net sales grew from ¥2,120.6 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2006 to ¥2,700.4 billion in the FY ended March 2008, and operating income from ¥118.1 billion to ¥180.5 billion. In June 2007 he promoted Norio Oku and Shunichi Nakamura to Executive Vice President, forming a lineup of four Representative Directors and Executive Vice Presidents. In the FY ended March 2009, spanning the global financial crisis, the company swung into the red with consolidated net sales of ¥2,214.5 billion, an operating loss of ¥3.5 billion and a net loss of ¥25.1 billion. The annual securities report for that year, filed in the month he stepped down, named pushing through structural reform and transforming into a lean, robust corporate constitution as its challenges.
