Background
He joined Toyota Motor Sales in April 1975. He became a Managing Officer of Toyota Motor in June 2004, Senior Managing Director in June 2009 and Executive Vice President in June 2013. From June 2007 he also served as President of Toyota Transportation, running the logistics subsidiary. He had never worked at Aisin Seiki, and two months after becoming a Director of Toyota Motor in April 2015 he moved to become President of Aisin Seiki, in which Toyota held 22.25%.
Selection
He became President of Aisin Seiki in June 2015, succeeding Fumio Fujimori. The three Executive Vice Presidents listed in the same annual securities report were all Aisin Seiki career employees: Makoto Mitsuya had taken 32 years from joining to reach Executive Vice President, Naofumi Fujie 37 and Hitoshi Okabe 39. Ihara became President without ever having been on Aisin Seiki's payroll, and the largest shareholder in the fiscal year ended March 2015 was Toyota Motor with 22.25%.
Initiatives
During his tenure Aisin Seiki brought two parts makers under its umbrella. In April 2016 it made Shiroki Corporation a wholly owned subsidiary through a share exchange, and in February 2017 it made Art Metal Manufacturing a subsidiary through a share acquisition. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥2,964.6 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2015, the year before he took office, to ¥3,908.9 billion in the FY ended March 2018, the year he stepped down, and consolidated operating income from ¥166.1 billion to ¥253.8 billion.
