Background
He joined IHI in April 1983 and from April 2013 spent four years as president of Jurong Engineering in Singapore. He became an Executive Officer of the parent in April 2017, 34 years after joining. He became Managing Executive Officer in April 2019 and Representative Director, President and COO the following June, in 2020. Whereas the two previous presidents had served as directors before becoming President, he rose straight from Managing Executive Officer without first serving as a director.
Selection
In June 2020 he succeeded Jiro Mitsuoka as Representative Director, President and COO, adding the CEO role in April 2021. In the fiscal year ended March 2020, the year before, consolidated revenue was ¥1,386.5 billion and operating income ¥47.9 billion, down 40% from ¥82.5 billion the previous year. Results fell further in his first year, FY ended March 2021, to revenue of ¥1,115.0 billion, operating income of ¥28.0 billion and net income of ¥2.9 billion.
Initiatives
In 2021 he set out a policy of building a business structure to pair with aero engines while keeping aero engines at the core. The company said it would continue reducing CO2 from coal-fired power equipment and named the use of ammonia and hydrogen as the next sources of earnings. In 2023 he launched "Project Change," a policy of transforming business, people and work styles together. The fiscal year ended March 2024 brought an operating loss of ¥70.1 billion and a net loss of ¥68.2 billion, but in FY ended March 2026 results recovered to revenue of ¥1,643.4 billion, operating income of ¥165.5 billion and net income of ¥161.0 billion.
