Background

He graduated from the University of Tokyo's law faculty in March 1939 and joined Ishikawajima Shipyard that April. In January 1959 he moved to Ishikawajima do Brasil Estaleiros as a director, then became a Director of the head office in November 1964 and Managing Director in November 1968. In October 1973 he went to Brazil again, serving as Representative Director and Executive Vice President of Ishikawajima do Brasil Estaleiros. His career ran not through the shipyard floor but through managing an overseas subsidiary.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Law (1939)

Selection

He became Representative Director and President in June 1979, succeeding Hisashi Shinto. In the fiscal year ended March 1979, the year before, the company posted an ordinary loss of ¥10.1 billion, down from ordinary income of ¥20.9 billion the previous year. Ubukata had until then been Executive Vice President of Ishikawajima do Brasil Estaleiros, while at head office Kosaku Inaba and Kiyoto Urakawa were serving as Representative Directors and Executive Vice Presidents. The appointment appears to have called him back from outside the head office hierarchy.

Initiatives

In his first year, the fiscal year ended March 1980, the ordinary loss widened to ¥19.0 billion. It returned to a profit of ¥9.4 billion in FY ended March 1981 and built up to ¥19.9 billion in FY ended March 1982. Net sales ranged from ¥691.3 billion to ¥777.7 billion over this period, so profitability was restored without expanding scale. In the 1981 directory, Ubukata was President and his successor Kosaku Inaba was Representative Director and Executive Vice President.
