Background

He joined Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries in July 1971. The first post appearing in his career summary in the annual securities report is Deputy General Manager of Finance in July 2002; he became Executive Officer and General Manager of Finance in June 2004, Managing Executive Officer in April 2005 and a Director that June. The summary records no service as head of a business division or plant manager; he rose to the board through accounting and finance. As of the fiscal year ended March 2011 he held 113 thousand shares of the company.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Economics (1971)

Selection

In April 2007 he succeeded Motoshige Ito as Representative Director, President and Chief Operating Officer, one year and ten months after joining the board. In the fiscal year ended March 2007, just before he took office, the company posted a consolidated operating loss of ¥5.6 billion, an ordinary loss of ¥8.7 billion and a net loss of ¥4.5 billion, and losses continued after he took office, with an operating loss of ¥16.8 billion and an ordinary loss of ¥30.8 billion in FY ended March 2008. The three Executive Vice Presidents on the same board had become directors between 2006 and 2008 after serving as heads of business divisions or presidents of overseas subsidiaries, so his was an appointment from finance with no business-side background.

Initiatives

Three months after he took office, in July 2007, the company changed its name from Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. to IHI Corporation. In March 2008 it acquired shares of the Netherlands' Hauzer Techno Coating B.V. to expand its industrial furnace business, in July transferred its cement plant business to Kawasaki Plant Systems, and converted IHI INC. into a regional headquarters for the Americas with a capital increase. Consolidated results turned from an operating loss of ¥16.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2008 to operating income of ¥61.4 billion in FY ended March 2011, when net sales were ¥1,187.2 billion.
