Background

He graduated from the shipbuilding department of Kyushu Imperial University's Faculty of Engineering in March 1934 and joined Harima Shipbuilding that April. In August 1951 he left for National Bulk Carriers, serving as engineering manager of its Kure shipbuilding division. He left that company in August 1960, joined Ishikawajima Heavy Industries as a counselor in September, and in November became Managing Director and head of the Shipbuilding Division. He became Representative Director and Executive Vice President in November 1964.

Education: Kyushu Imperial University, Faculty of Engineering, Naval Architecture (now Kyushu University) (1934)

Selection

He became Representative Director and President in November 1972. His predecessor Renzo Taguchi moved to Representative Director and Chairman that same month. It took him just two months from joining in September 1960 to become Managing Director, in contrast with Kiyoshi Okubo, listed as Executive Vice President in the 1974 directory, who spent 19 years from joining Harima Shipbuilding in 1937 to reaching the board. The appointment appears to have placed a shipbuilding engineer who had spent nine years outside the company in the post, skipping the usual career sequence.

Initiatives

Over his six years in office net sales grew 1.8 times, from ¥435.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1973 to ¥763.4 billion in FY ended March 1978. Ordinary income peaked at ¥35.3 billion in FY ended March 1974 and then thinned, turning into a ¥10.1 billion loss in FY ended March 1979, his final year. Net income also fell from ¥11.7 billion in FY ended March 1977 to ¥2.0 billion. In June 1979 he handed the presidency to Taiji Ubukata.
