Background
He joined IHI in April 1980 and became an Executive Officer in April 2010, 30 years after joining. He became Managing Executive Officer in April 2013, a Director in June 2014 and President in April 2016. It took him one year and ten months from director to President, shorter than the four years taken by his predecessor Tamotsu Saito. It was 36 years from joining to the presidency.
Selection
In April 2016 he succeeded Tamotsu Saito as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2016, the year before, consolidated revenue was ¥1,539.3 billion against operating income of ¥22.0 billion and net income of ¥1.5 billion, with operating income down to nearly a third of the previous year's ¥63.3 billion. His predecessor had been promoted from Representative Director and Executive Vice President, but he was appointed from Director and Managing Executive Officer. He inherited a trend of revenue growth with thinning profitability.
