Background
He graduated from the mechanical department of Yonezawa Higher Technical School in March 1929 and joined Ishikawajima Shipyard that April. He became a Director in February 1947, Managing Director in November 1954, Representative Director that December and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 1961. It took 18 years from joining to the board and 35 to the presidency. He was a career employee who rose within one company without working anywhere else.
Selection
He became Representative Director and President in November 1964. His predecessor Toshio Doko moved to Representative Director and Chairman and in May 1965 also became Representative Director of Tokyo Shibaura Electric. In the 1964 directory Taguchi was the sole Representative Director and Executive Vice President, while the Managing Directors with representative authority included Kumaichi Migita, who had come from Harima Shipbuilding, and Shin Morishita, formerly of the Bank of Japan. Four years after the merger, the appointment appears to have returned management to an Ishikawajima career man.
Initiatives
Over his eight years in office net sales grew 3.6 times, from ¥113.1 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1965 to ¥403.0 billion in FY ended March 1972. Net income, over the same period, only went from ¥3.3 billion to ¥4.8 billion. The 1964 board list included two directors heading construction of the Negishi shipbuilding works and the Negishi machinery works. In November 1972 he stepped back to Representative Director and Chairman and handed the presidency to Hisashi Shinto.
