Background
He joined IHI in April 1975 and became an Executive Officer 31 years later, in June 2006. He became a Director in April 2008 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in April 2011, and President a year later, in April 2012. It was 37 years from joining to President and six from executive officer, of which one was spent as Executive Vice President.
Selection
In April 2012 he succeeded Kazuaki Kama as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2012, the year before, consolidated net sales were ¥1,221.8 billion and operating income ¥43.3 billion, down 30% from ¥61.4 billion the previous year. Net income also fell from ¥29.7 billion to ¥23.8 billion. The change came one year after he became Representative Director and Executive Vice President. The promotion to Executive Vice President appears to have been the step that designated the successor.
Initiatives
Over his four years, consolidated revenue grew 23% from ¥1,256.0 billion to ¥1,539.3 billion, and employees from 26,618 to 29,494. Profits moved the other way: operating income peaked at ¥63.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2015 and fell to ¥22.0 billion in FY ended March 2016, his final year. Net income shrank from ¥33.3 billion in his first year to ¥1.5 billion. They were four years in which the company grew in scale while profitability thinned.
