Selection

In 1981 he succeeded Fumi Hirano as President. In the fiscal year ended December 1980, the year before, non-consolidated net sales were ¥517.3 billion and ordinary income ¥48.7 billion, down from ¥52.6 billion the previous year. The installation rate of air conditioners in passenger cars was approaching 90%, so demand would henceforth track vehicle production. With the business that earned most of the profit running out of room to grow, he appears to have been charged with finding the next source of earnings.

Initiatives

In 1982 he drew up a ¥1 trillion sales plan built on three pillars: electronics, overseas and car air conditioners. Of the ¥1 trillion, ¥100 billion was to come from non-automotive business. At the time, the heating and cooling equipment division, just under 40% of sales, earned most of the profit. On the land in Battle Creek, Michigan acquired in 1978, he decided to break ground on a new plant in spring 1985, and in December 1985 established Nippondenso America in the United States.
