In 1976 he succeeded Takeaki Shirai as President. In the fiscal year ended December 1975, the year before, non-consolidated net sales were ¥226.6 billion and ordinary income ¥17.8 billion. Sales of heating and cooling equipment, including car air conditioners, had just reached ¥77.0 billion in fiscal 1975, overtaking the ¥74.1 billion of electrical components. Nippondenso had set up an in-house training school soon after its founding to develop its own skilled workers, and in 1961 became the first auto parts maker to win the Deming Prize.

Initiatives

In 1978 he acquired land in Battle Creek, Michigan, laying the groundwork for local production. Sales of heating and cooling equipment, including car air conditioners, reached ¥202.4 billion in fiscal 1980, widening the gap with the ¥153.2 billion of electrical components. On a non-consolidated basis, the company posted net sales of ¥390.9 billion and ordinary income of ¥44.7 billion in the fiscal year ended December 1978, and ¥454.5 billion and ¥52.6 billion in FY ended December 1979.
