Selection

In 1986 he succeeded Kengo Toda as President. In the fiscal year ended December 1985, the year before, non-consolidated net sales were ¥908.8 billion and net income ¥41.3 billion, and the ¥1 trillion sales plan set in 1982 was close to being achieved. In his first year, FY ended December 1986, sales were ¥964.7 billion and net income fell to ¥28.7 billion. He appears to have taken on the task of building earnings after the ¥1 trillion mark.

Initiatives

For the fiscal year ended December 1990, consolidated net sales were ¥1,511.6 billion and net income ¥63.0 billion. In 1989 Toyota Motor built its new Hirose plant in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, moving on its own into production of electronic control units and sensors and R&D on automotive ICs. Toyota's in-house production aimed to give it direct command of the technology and cost of the electronic parts that determine vehicle performance. The conditions for the parent becoming a competitor in electronics appear to have taken shape during his tenure.
