Background

He joined Fujitsu in 1976, becoming Corporate Vice President in June 2005 and Corporate Senior Vice President in June 2007. Just before becoming President he was Corporate Executive Vice President, a post he took in January 2010. He became President in April 2010 and Representative Director and President in June that year, then Representative Director and Chairman in June 2015 and Director and Senior Advisor in June 2019.

Education: Kyushu University, Faculty of Engineering, Electrical Engineering (1976)

Selection

On April 1, 2010, he succeeded Michiyoshi Mazuka as President. The presidency had changed twice in the half year since Kuniaki Nozoe's resignation in September 2009, and in March 2010 Nozoe's removal as senior adviser was followed by a strict warning from the Tokyo Stock Exchange. In the fiscal year ended March 2010, the year before he took office, net sales were ¥4,679.5 billion and net income ¥93.1 billion. Governance of a corporate group with 183,508 employees fell to a man who had been Executive Vice President for three months.

Initiatives

He kept making decisions to separate the company's founding hardware businesses. In August 2012 he sold part of Fujitsu Semiconductor to a domestic foundry, and in March 2014 spun off the mobile phone business as Fujitsu Connected Technologies. In March 2015 Socionext, which took over the design divisions of both companies through the integration of the system LSI businesses with Panasonic, began operations. The semiconductor unit had changed its name from Fujitsu Microelectronics to Fujitsu Semiconductor in April 2010.
