Background
He appears as Managing Director on the board list as of January 1964, having previously worked at Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation. An outside communications engineer brought onto the board, he had no shareholding behind him. As of March 1975 corporations dominated the shareholder list, with Fuji Electric Manufacturing at 28.74%, Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank at 9.73% and Asahi Mutual Life Insurance at 9.24%, and no individual made the top ten. Fuji Electric Manufacturing's stake, 48.3% in March 1963, had fallen to 28.74% over those 12 years.
Selection
In November 1974 he succeeded Yoshimitsu Kora as President. In the fiscal year ended March 1974, the year before he took office, net sales were ¥209.3 billion and ordinary income ¥15.3 billion, ordinary income having fallen for three straight years from ¥25.0 billion in the FY ended March 1971. In May 1974, half a year before he took office, the company had invested in Amdahl of the US under Toshio Ikeda's leadership, gaining a development base and sales network for IBM-compatible mainframes. A director who had come up through engineering became President just as the compatible strategy was getting under way.
Initiatives
What he inherited on taking office was a strategy of winning customers with IBM-compatible machines rather than developing a proprietary architecture in-house. Its foothold was the May 1974 investment in Amdahl of the US, which had given the company a development base and sales network for IBM-compatible mainframes. Net sales in the fiscal year ended March 1975, during his tenure, were ¥250.3 billion, up 20% from ¥209.3 billion the year before he took office. Ordinary income fell from ¥15.3 billion to ¥10.9 billion, and the ordinary margin dropped from 7.3% to 4.4%.
