Background

He joined NEC in April 1966, becoming a Director in June 1995 and Managing Director in June 1999. From December 2000 he also served as Executive Vice President of the internal company NEC Networks, leading the communications infrastructure business. He became Director and Senior Managing Director in April 2003, Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2004, and Representative Director, Executive Officer and Executive Vice President in March 2005.

In April 2006 he succeeded Akinobu Kanasugi, rising from Representative Director, Executive Officer and Executive Vice President to President. In the fiscal year ended March 2006, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥4,824.9 billion and net income ¥12.1 billion, down from ¥77.2 billion the previous year. As of March 2006 trust banks dominated the top shareholders, followed by Sumitomo Life Insurance with 2.05% and Nippon Life Insurance with 2.00%.

Initiatives

In May 2006 he made NEC Infrontia a wholly owned subsidiary. In the fiscal year ended March 2009 the company posted consolidated net sales of ¥4,215.6 billion, an operating loss of ¥6.2 billion and a net loss of ¥296.6 billion, a year in which restructuring costs piled up in semiconductors, mobile phones and overseas communications. In the FY ended March 2010, his final year, net sales shrank to ¥3,583.1 billion while operating income recovered to ¥50.9 billion and net income to ¥11.4 billion. In April 2010 he handed the presidency to Nobuhiro Endo.
