Background
He joined NEC in 1948 and became director of the Central Research Laboratories in April 1965. He became a Director in November 1974, Managing Director in June 1977 and Senior Managing Director in June 1978. An engineer who had led the research division, he was, unlike the two previous Presidents who came from Sumitomo, a career employee raised inside the company.
Selection
In June 1980 he succeeded Tadao Tanaka, rising from Senior Managing Director to President. Non-consolidated net sales in the fiscal year ended March 1980, the year before he took office, were ¥719.8 billion, 1.7 times the ¥427.4 billion of the FY ended March 1976 four years earlier. The C&C concept proposed in 1978 by Chairman Koji Kobayashi was taken up as a business by a Senior Managing Director from the research division.
Initiatives
He launched the PC-9800 series in October 1982. In 1990 he called corporate philosophy and culture the fifth management resource and championed differentiation through software. Non-consolidated net sales reached ¥1,889.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1985, and after consolidated net sales of ¥3,773.9 billion in the FY ended March 1992, the company posted an ordinary loss of ¥37.7 billion and a net loss of ¥45.2 billion in the FY ended March 1993. In June 1994 he moved to Chairman, handing the presidency to Hisashi Kaneko.
