Background
He joined NEC in 1967, heading the Information Processing Systems Division in 1987 and the C&C Medical Systems Division in 1991. He became a Director in 1995 and Managing Director in 1999, and from 2000 also served as President of the internal company NEC Solutions. A career employee, he led the systems business from the front line.
Selection
In March 2003 he succeeded Koji Nishigaki, rising from Senior Managing Director to President. Nishigaki became senior adviser the following April. In the fiscal year ended March 2002, the year before he took office, the company posted a consolidated net loss of ¥307.9 billion, and the loss continued at ¥12.3 billion in the FY ended March 2003, his first year. A man who had led one of the internal companies established in April 2000 became President of the parent.
Initiatives
He reorganized the company into a business line system in April 2003 and a business unit system in April 2004. In June 2005 he made NEC Soft and NEC System Technologies wholly owned subsidiaries, bringing the systems integration business under the parent. Consolidated net results returned to profits of ¥10.0 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2004 and ¥77.2 billion in the FY ended March 2005, but fell to ¥12.1 billion in the FY ended March 2006, his final year. In April 2006 he handed the presidency to Kaoru Yano.
