Background
He joined Sumitomo's head office in January 1938 and moved to NEC in 1944. He became a Director in May 1966, Senior Managing Director in November 1970 and Executive Vice President in November 1974. Following Hinko Watanabe, he was another executive who came from Sumitomo, without the backing of ownership that a founding family would have.
Selection
In June 1976 he succeeded Koji Kobayashi, rising from Executive Vice President to President. Kobayashi moved to Chairman the same month, continuing the setup in which the Chairman and President ran the company together. In the fiscal year ended March 1976, the year before he took office, ordinary income was ¥6.0 billion on non-consolidated net sales of ¥427.4 billion, less than a third of the ¥22.0 billion in the FY ended March 1971.
Initiatives
During his tenure, in 1978, Chairman Koji Kobayashi proposed the C&C concept, referring to the fusion of computing and communications. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥427.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1976, the year before he took office, to ¥719.8 billion in the FY ended March 1980, his final year, and ordinary income recovered from ¥6.0 billion to ¥23.5 billion. In June 1980 he handed the presidency to Tadahiro Sekimoto.
