Background

Born in Kumamoto in 1900, he graduated from the electrical department of Kumamoto Higher Technical School in March 1921. He joined the Hyogo prefectural government in 1922, and in 1930 left Inoue Electric Works. In May 1933 he founded Tateishi Electric Works to make timers for X-ray photography. He moved the plant to Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, in June 1945, and became Representative Director and President when the business was incorporated in May 1948. Starting out as an engineer, he simply continued to lead the works he had built himself.

Education: Kumamoto Higher Technical School, Electrical Engineering (now Kumamoto University, Faculty of Engineering) (1921)

Selection

He had no predecessor. In May 1948 he reorganized the works he had run as a sole proprietorship for 12 years into Tateishi Electric Co., Ltd., and became its Representative Director and President. The starting point was a company whose staff had shrunk to 33 because of war damage, with sales dependent on a single product, protective relays. In 1955 he launched the producer system, separating sales and research and setting up independent specialized plants side by side, moving to a decentralized production structure. With the founder holding both ownership and management, the appointment simply gave the business its corporate form.

Initiatives

In 1955, with 110 employees and annual sales of ¥240 million, the company set out to develop the automation market. In 1960 it developed the world's first contactless proximity switch, breaking its dependence on protective relays. It listed on the Kyoto and Osaka stock exchanges in April 1962, and in March 1967 the world's first unmanned station system went into operation at Hankyu's Kita-Senri Station. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥0.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1961 to ¥101.1 billion in the FY ended March 1979. In June 1979 he became Representative Director and Chairman.
