Background

He joined Nissho Iwai in April 1991, moved to Calsonic Kansei in February 2008 and to Nissan Motor in April 2012. At Calsonic Kansei he became Senior Vice President in April 2010, and at Nissan he served as Representative Director and President of Nissan Motor Thailand from January 2014. He joined Nidec as a special adviser in March 2015 and in May that year became Representative Director and President of the subsidiary Nidec Tosok. He became Executive Vice President in November 2016, Representative Director and Chairman of Nidec Tosok in January 2017, Director and Executive Vice President in June 2017, and Representative Director, Executive Vice President and COO in April 2018.

Education: Osaka University, Faculty of Human Sciences

Selection

In June 2018 he succeeded founder Shigenobu Nagamori as Representative Director, President, Executive Officer and COO. He was appointed three years and three months after joining in March 2015, and this was the first time Nidec's presidency passed to someone other than the founder. In the fiscal year ended March 2018, the year before he took office, net sales were ¥1,459.0 billion and operating income ¥166.8 billion, both up from ¥1,199.3 billion and ¥139.4 billion the previous year. The appointment was arranged as a generational handover from the founder, not because of poor results.

Initiatives

His two years in office combined rising sales with falling profits. In the fiscal year ended March 2019, net sales of ¥1,475.4 billion exceeded the previous year, while operating income fell ¥37.6 billion to ¥129.2 billion; in the FY ended March 2020, net sales were ¥1,534.8 billion, operating income ¥108.6 billion and net income ¥58.4 billion, with net income halving from ¥109.9 billion. In April 2020 he stepped down as President, handing over to Jun Seki, formerly of Nissan Motor.
