Background

He joined Nissan Motor in April 1986 and spent nearly 34 years there. He became Senior Vice President in April 2014 and Vice Chief Operating Officer in December 2019, reaching the top management team. In January 2020 he moved to Nidec as a special adviser and three months later, in April, became President, Executive Officer and COO. His predecessor Hiroyuki Yoshimoto had also passed through Nissan, making two Nissan alumni in a row.

Education: National Defense Academy

Selection

In April 2020 he succeeded Hiroyuki Yoshimoto as President, Executive Officer and COO. His predecessor had served about two years, and succession from the founder had not been settled in one attempt. In the fiscal year ended March 2020, the year before he took office, operating income was ¥108.6 billion on net sales of ¥1,534.8 billion, down for a second straight year from ¥166.8 billion in the FY ended March 2018. He became Representative Director, President and Executive Officer in June that year and also CEO in June 2021, but returned to COO in April 2022, with Shigenobu Nagamori taking the CEO role.

Initiatives

Sales and profits rose in both years of his tenure. In the fiscal year ended March 2021, net sales were ¥1,618.0 billion and operating income ¥160.0 billion, with operating income up nearly 50% from ¥1,534.8 billion and ¥108.6 billion the previous year; in the FY ended March 2022, net sales of ¥1,918.1 billion, operating income of ¥170.4 billion and net income of ¥135.7 billion all exceeded the prior year. Even so, he stepped down as President in September 2022 and was succeeded by Hiroshi Kobe, who had taken part in the founding in July 1973.
