Background
He joined the company in 1970, became Corporate Officer and head of the International Pharmaceuticals Division in October 1998 and a Director in June 1999. With a career in the international division, he became President in June 2003.
Selection
In June 2003 he became President, succeeding Kunio Takeda. Kunio had kept revenue and profit growing through his ten years in office, yet Takeda still ranked only 15th in the world at the time. In the fiscal year ended March 2003, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥1,046.0 billion and ordinary income ¥405.2 billion.
Initiatives
In March 2008 he dissolved the joint venture with Abbott and made TAP a wholly owned subsidiary. In May of that year the company made Millennium Pharmaceuticals of the US a subsidiary through a tender offer, for a total acquisition cost of about ¥880 billion. In September 2011 it acquired Nycomed of Switzerland for €9.6 billion, or about ¥1.1 trillion, expanding the number of countries it operated in from 28 to more than 70. The consideration was cash, funded with about ¥600 billion in borrowing. In June 2014 he brought in Christophe Weber as his successor.
