Background
In January 1925 Takeda Chobei Shoten merged with Takeda Seiyaku, which had earlier been separated from it, to form Takeda Chobei Shoten Co., Ltd. with capital of ¥5.3 million. It was a company whose trade name was the family name itself. In 1940 the fifth Chobei laid down the Takeda family's rules, five articles headed by "to make service to the public and the nation the foremost principle." Eitaro Takeda took over the family business from the fifth Chobei and assumed the name of the sixth Chobei in August 1943.
Selection
In August 1943 he became President at the same time as the company's name changed to Takeda Pharmaceutical Industries. The previous President, the fifth Chobei, changed his name to Wakei and stepped back to senior adviser. Research into domestic pharmaceuticals had borne fruit in the synthesis of vitamin C in 1937, B1 in 1938 and K in 1942, and in July 1944 the company absorbed Konishi Yakuhin and Radium Seiyaku of Tokyo, raising its capital to ¥35.7 million. It was a family succession by hereditary name, and no record of a selection process remains.
Initiatives
After the war its production facilities survived, and it used the raw materials on hand to make vitamin B and C preparations and glucose injections, supplying them to the public through regular channels rather than the black market. In May 1946 it acquired the site of the former Navy Hikari Arsenal and built the Hikari Plant, and in May 1949 it listed its shares on the Tokyo and Osaka stock exchanges. In August 1962 it set up Taiwan Takeda Ltd. In 1968 it introduced a divisional system covering pharmaceuticals, pharmaceutical sales, foods, chemicals, agrochemicals and international business, reaching net sales of ¥120.0 billion and 11,611 employees.
