Background
He served as Executive Vice President of Takeda Pharmaceutical and was promoted to President in 1981. A person raised within the company took the President's seat, previously held by Chobei Takeda of the Takeda family and then Shinbei Konishi. At the end of March 1980 the major shareholders were led by Nippon Life Insurance at 8.79% and Dai-ichi Life Insurance at 8.75%, with Akio Takeda third at 5.92%. He took office without any shareholding backing.
Selection
In 1981 he became President, succeeding Shinbei Konishi. Konishi moved to Chairman, and in 1983, as Chairman, ordered Kunio Takeda to go to TAP, the US joint venture. In the fiscal year ended March 1981, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥450.5 billion and net income ¥22.4 billion. The promotion came while his predecessor, as Chairman, was still steering personnel decisions.
Initiatives
TAP, the joint venture with Abbott Laboratories of the US, was established in the US in May 1985. Before that, in 1983, Chairman Shinbei Konishi had sent Kunio Takeda to TAP, and Kunio went to the US as its Executive Vice President. The product chosen was not the antibiotics in which Takeda excelled but Leuprorelin, an anticancer drug for prostate cancer; in 1985, Managing Director Katsura Morita, in charge of development, expressed the view that unfortunately the market was not that large, and the reception within the company was cool.
