He became Managing Director heading the Tokyo metropolitan division in June 1996 and Managing Director and head of the sales headquarters in April 1998, spending the full 40 years from joining to the presidency on the sales front lines and in overseeing the sales organization.

Selection

In August 2002, beef mislabeling by subsidiary Nippon Food came to light, and the founding family, including President Keiji Okoso and Yoshinori Okoso, withdrew from management. Yoshikiyo Fujii, then Managing Director and head of the sales headquarters, succeeded as president. In the fiscal year ended March 2002, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥945.0 billion and net income ¥17.7 billion, but in the FY ended March 2003, which spanned the scandal, they fell to ¥909.9 billion and ¥4.4 billion. The appointment appears to have placed a career employee who had overseen the nationwide sales network in the post vacated by the founding family.

Initiatives

During his tenure, consolidated net sales bottomed at ¥909.9 billion in the FY ended March 2003 and recovered to ¥926.0 billion in FY ended March 2004, ¥934.6 billion in FY ended March 2005 and ¥963.6 billion in FY ended March 2006, reaching ¥975.4 billion in the FY ended March 2007, his final year, above the pre-scandal level. Net income also recovered from ¥4.4 billion in the FY ended March 2003 to ¥11.3 billion in the FY ended March 2007. In April 2007 he handed the presidency to Hiroshi Kobayashi.
