Background
He joined Nippon Meat Packers in April 1969. He advanced to Director in June 2000, Senior Executive Officer in April 2003 and Managing Executive Officer in April 2005, and became president in April 2007, his 38th year with the company. Before he took office, in the FY ended March 2006, the top shareholders were The Master Trust Bank of Japan at 6.96%, Mitsubishi Corporation at 5.16% and Japan Trustee Services Bank at 4.85%, with no individual shareholder among the top ten. He was a career-employee president with no backing from share ownership.

In April 2007 he succeeded Yoshikiyo Fujii as president. In the fiscal year ended March 2007, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥975.4 billion and operating income ¥14.6 billion; since the FY ended March 2006 before it had posted an operating loss of ¥13.5 billion, the change came just after a return from the red. He was promoted two years after becoming Managing Executive Officer in April 2005.
Initiatives
During his tenure, consolidated net sales passed the ¥1 trillion mark at ¥1,029.6 billion in the FY ended March 2008. They fell to ¥953.6 billion in the FY ended March 2010 but returned to ¥1,017.7 billion in the FY ended March 2012. Operating income grew 2.3-fold from ¥14.6 billion in the year before he took office to ¥33.2 billion in the FY ended March 2011, and headcount rose from 15,145 to 15,593.
