Background

Shuji Abe joined Yoshinoya in February 1972 and entered management 11 years later, in March 1983, as Director and General Manager of the Development Department. Yoshinoya filed for corporate reorganization proceedings in July 1980 and the proceedings concluded in March 1987, so Abe became a Director midway through. He then advanced to Managing Director in March 1988, Representative Director and Managing Director in August 1990, and Representative Director and Senior Managing Director in May 1991. Born in September 1949, he was 43 when he became President in September 1992. As of the FY ended February 2011 he held 1,075 shares.

Selection

Abe became President in September 1992, one year and four months after becoming Representative Director and Senior Managing Director. Of the four others on the officer list for the FY ended February 2011, Masayuki Orita took 18 years from joining in 1977 to becoming a Director in 1995, Tsuneyasu Tanaka 14 years from 1979 to 1993, Kojiro Idei 22 years from 1978 to 2000, and Ryusuke Tanaka 18 years from 1979 to 1998. Abe's 11 years from joining to Director was the shortest of the five.

Initiatives

After making Kyotaru a subsidiary in October 1999 and listing on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in November 2000, the company suspended sales of beef bowls in February 2004 in response to the ban on US beef imports. Limited sales resumed in September 2006, and 24-hour sales in March 2008. In October 2007 it transferred the beef bowl business to a wholly owned subsidiary, Yoshinoya, through an incorporation-type company split, changed its name to Yoshinoya Holdings, and became a pure holding company. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥122.4 billion in the FY ended February 2006 to ¥174.2 billion in the FY ended February 2009, and the FY ended February 2010 brought a net loss of ¥8.9 billion.
